![]() ![]() Like the first Firebirds, this Custom Shop recreation employs Gibson's unusual "reverse" body design so prized by collectors. The guitar comes with the original hardshell case, signed COA, inspection checklists, and other paperwork as shown. The guitar is all-original and minty except one pickup was rewound by Lindy Fralin (matched to the other brilliantly). I've only seen them in the 30's serial number range and all were from Wildwood Guitars so I assume it was a special request. Tom Murphy aged, perfect copy of Johnny Winter's main guitar! Only 150 were made, but only a very select few have the hand-signed back plate. ![]() Only a few of these were hand-signed on the back plate as well as the certificate. If found used I would probably buy any of those listed in your post.2008 Gibson Custom Shop Johnny Winter '63 Firebird AGED and SIGNED! followed by mojo, these are the best value I have found for birds and both will wind them the way you like. Mr fabulous had the least expensive offerings and winds them a little hotter then vintage. The vintage neck is often just under 7k And that really does sound great and has plenty of output.Ī good set of pickups with a proper 500k harness really makes a difference, the whole thing is not cheap but worthwhile. 010 caps in the neck this really can put a 7k bridge off balance so I like them wound to around 8-9k with Alnico II or V bars. The bridge could use a little bump beyond the vintage range and often needs a shim to catch the strings correctly. But For me the traditional PU builds for birds are still not well balanced. ![]() They all sound good to great compared to the originals. My current bird has mojos in it and they are very nice, but I have used lollar, Duncan's, Mr Fabulous and a few others. Though I can honestly do just fine with the stock pickups, they are not optimal. I have had several Birds and changed the pickups in about half of them. I am inclined to the Mojos as they are UK based, as I am, but any feedback on these models would be appreciated The following companies make well thought of pickups for a FB. But I am interested to get some feedback from any FB players on here who have made the swap and have any thoughts, opinions or recommendations? I watched this video of a comparison and found it interesting as part of me likes the sound from the stock PUs as I am used to it, but I do like the clearer chimey sound of this guys Mojo replacement PUs.Īnyhow I am not trying to start a "stock pickups are crap" thread. It is easy to get sucked into it all when people describe an earth shattering difference when they change the PUs! I have lived with the stock PUs for 5 years of playing so it is not a snap decision of someone unfamiliar with the sound However they are expensive and I am not in a position to buy three types and compare! As a bit of a niche guitar there is not a huge amount of audio info out there but lots of furious debate on various forums about it. At the end of the day I can always sell them on if I don't love them or see much difference. Both sound awesome.Īs I have never done it before I thought I may take a punt for fun and buy some different PUs for the Firebird. I have played cheaper guitars for years, my other main guitars are a SG copy I got for £300 and a Mexican Tele. I am not someone obsessed with upgrading parts of a guitar thinking it will make me a better player. I have generally managed to get a sound I like out of everything with my amp. I should state I have always played stock pickups in all my previous guitars and the others I own. I generally play clean with some gain and get some grit as the amp warms up nicely. I have played around with various settings but even my lovely Fender Blues Junior valve amp can't seem to give it any sparkle. I have been able to wring a good sound from the neck PU and from both together but the bridge has always sounded thin and lifeless. I have a Gibson Firebird from 2008 and bloody love everything about it apart from the sound I get from the bridge pickup. ![]()
